Track description 17

Start – Öjvasseln approx. 90 km (PD 160 och PD 300)

The start for both PD160 and PD300 takes place at Särna campground, Särna. The track goes NNE across the Särna lake. After a short uphill slope you cross a small road and then you are in the forest. The track passes through various landscapes with pine tree forests and marsh areas for about 2 kilometers where the track turns right in SSE direction. The track now follows an non-ploughed road for about 2 kilometers, than leaves the road, passes behind the buildings at Off Road and reaches a T-crossing after another kilometer. Here the track turns left (in NE direction) and after approx. 5 kilometers the track passes Fjätan. After the passage of Fjätan the track continues in NE direction and starts to climb slowly. At Dyvelberget the track turns towards N and then slowly towards W. The pine tree forest now slowly changes over to a birch forest and when you reach the snowmobile track between Särna and Vedungsfjället only the birches remain.  At this point the track turns right (towards NE) and you will soon be out in the open mountain. The track goes uphill and makes a long curve and when you reach a locked cabin (”Blåsut”) the direction is NNW. At ”Blåsut” there will be a major change of the direction (right turn) from NW to E and at the same time the track starts to go downhill towards Lövhögen. Lövhögen will be reached after 4 kilometers and the track has then dropped 160 meters. Just before the cabins (private and locked) in Lövhögen you will pass Stor-Härjån. Notice! The bridge over Stor-Härjån is narrow.

At Lövhögen the track continues lightly uphill and turns left and follows Stor-Härjån in  NW direction. The birch forest that you meet just before Lövhögen will follow you for the next 6 kilometers. After the 6 kilometers the track turns towards W and passes Stor-Härjån and you are once again up in the open mountain. The track now goes slightly uphill and after about 1 kilometer it turns right (towards NNW). The next 2 kilometers are slightly downhill. After this the track starts to go uphill towards Västra Långheden where the track turns left (towards SSW).

After passing Västra Långheden the track first goes downhill for about 2 kilometers and then starts climbing towards the highest point of the track, 940 meters above sea level. From this point you will have an amazing sight towards south. As soon as you have passed this point you will meet a steep downhill slope and the 2 kilometers down to Morvallen will go very fast. Just before the cabins in Morvallen the birch trees appears and soon after that even the pine trees are back in the landscape. Pine trees so close to the open mountain means that the climate in this place is very warm.

Approximately 500 meters after you have passed Morvallen the track turns right (from S to NE) and starts to climb uphill again.  After 1 kilometer the track has reached the crest and now a very, very long downhill slope begins which almost continues all the way to the checkpoint in Öjvasseln. The first 3 kilometers will go fast! During this passage the track goes from the open mountain down to the pine tree forest which will follow you during the rest of this stage.  After these 3 fast kilometers the track turns left (towards S) as you reach a non-ploughed road. You will follow this road for about 11 kilometers, slightly downhill all the way. The last 5 kilometers up to the checkpoint is slightly uphill.

Öjvasseln – Öjvasseln approx. 135 km (PD 300).

The start from Öjvasseln goes north and will pass Nysätersvallen after 3 kilometers. After another 2 kilometers the track is up in the open mountain and the track turns right (towards NE). A 3 kilometers climb follows and when that is done, you have climbed 300 meters since you left Öjvasseln. The track now turns right and follows the trail towards Särna for 2.5 kilometers to the locked cabin (“Blåsut”) that you meet on the first stage. Now the track turns left (towards E) and you will follow the same track as you did during the first stage down to Lövhögen.

At Lövhögen the track continues towards NE for about 2 kilometers and then turns right (towards SE). Here a 13 kilometers nice downhill slope begins towards Lövnäsvallen. During these kilometers the landscape changes from the open mountain to a pine tree forest. When you reach Lövnäsvallen the track turns left (towards NE) which will be the main direction until you reach Digerflon. The distance to Digerflon is approx. 19 kilometer and begins with a 170 meters climb the first 8 kilometers, then the track starts to go slightly downhill to Digerflon. At Digerflon the track turns left (towards NW) and continues slightly downhill until you reach Ryflovallen.

When you have passed Ryflovallen the track continue in the same main direction, NW, but now slightly uphill until the track reaches the open mountain. The track keeps on in that direction until it reaches the shelter at Hågntjärn. At Hågntjärn the track turns left (SSW) and starts to slowly climb up to a point at 940 meters above sea level, which is the same altitude as on the first stage. You will reach this point 4 kilometers after the shelter at Hågntjärn and when you have passed this point a very long downhill passage begins. During the first 4 kilometers the track drops 220 meters and by then reaches Storfjäten and you will once again be down in the pine tree forest. At Storfjäten the track turns left (towards S) and continues slowly downhill. After approx. 5 kilometers the track reaches the snowmobile track that goes between Fjätervålen and Morvallen and at this point the track turns left (towards Morvallen). After another 2 kilometers you will be on a road and at the point where the first stage came down from Morvallen. The track now follows the same route as on the first stage up to the checkpoint.

Öjvasseln – FINISH approx. 65 km (PD 160 & PD 300).

The start from Öjvasseln goes north and will pass Nysätersvallen after 3 kilometers. After another 2 kilometers the track is up in the open mountain and the track turns right (towards NE). A 3 kilometers climb follows and when completed that you have climbed 300 meters since you left Öjvasseln. After this climb the track turns left (towards NW). The track follows the way rounding Vedungsfjället. The track follows the same altitude for about 2 kilometers followed by a slight downhill slope. This slope is approx. 4 kilometers and on this passage the track passes the point where stage 1 connected on its way out in the northern direction. After these 4 kilometers the track goes uphill all the way to Västra Långheden.

Different from stage 1 the track now continues in the same direction, NNW, after passing Västra Långheden for another kilometer. The track is now at 940 meters above sea level, the second time for PD160 and the third time for PD300 at this altitude..When the track has reached this point it will take a big change of direction and turns left from NNW to SW.

A very long downhill passage begins and it continues all the way until  you reach Fjätan. After another 2 kilometers you will reach the point where the first stage came down from Morvallen. You will now follow the same track as you did on stage 1 for approx. 4 kilometer. Pay attention because after these 4 kilometers the track turns right (towards W). Study the map carefully so you do not miss this turn!

The character of the track now changes rapidly from a nice downhill straight track along the road to something that now and then more feels like riding a rollercoaster. This part of the track is 3 kilometers and you will pass by Dalakojan and Fjätan after approx. 1,5 kilometers and after another 1,5 kilometers the track turns left (towards SE) and follows a small road for a few of kilometers. Pretty soon the track leaves the road and continue on some large marsh areas. The track passes over Höstet and then goes downhill until it reaches the main snowmobile track between Särna and Vedungsfjället. At this point the track turns right into a  SSW direction for the last 7 kilometers of the race.

Attention!

One (1) kilometer before the finish line you will pass the road (with traffic) between Särna and Östomsjön, the same road you passed directly after the start. The track goes downhill so you will probably have a good speed. You therefore have to pay extreme caution before you cross the road so that no accident happens!
